Peak business body welcomes ParanVille approval

Release Date: 1/02/2012

Statement by Robert Wallace – TCCI Chief Executive Officer

Tasmania’s peak business body, the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI) has applauded the Tasmanian Planning Commission’s decision to approve the major ParanVille residential and education development on Hobart’s eastern shore.

TCCI Chief Executive Robert Wallace said the decision sends a clear message to investors that Tasmania is opening for business and the project investment will provide a major boost to the State economy.

"This will be a project of State significance. One that will provide much needed boost to employment," Mr Wallace said.

"It comes at an important time for Tasmania, with the Tasmanian Government needing to pull back on spending to balance the Budget.

"The private sector is starting to fill the investment gap and the ParanVille project will certainly help in this regard."

Mr Wallace said the development of the language school and the MBKim Group’s educational partnership with UTAS will be particularly valuable, as will the cultural links developed between Korea and Tasmania.

The TCCI’s Chief Economist Mark Bowles said the Planning Commission’s decision and the potential considerable investment came at the right time for Tasmania.

"With unemployment potentially on the rise, it is the right type of private sector development that can create employment opportunities for Tasmanians.

"The international investment dimensions means that domestic funds for other business expansion and developments will not be squeezed," Mr Bowles said.
