Tasmanian Government needs to take heed of key lessons from Federal Budget

Release Date: 7/10/2020
The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says there are key lessons in last night’s Federal Budget for the Tasmanian Government.

TCCI CEO Michael Bailey said that as Tasmania’s Premier and Treasurer, Peter Gutwein, finalises his budget there are a few key lessons from the Federal Budget.

“The Premier should look at the Federal Budget as a template for the State Budget.  The key lessons from the Federal Budget are:

  • Tax reform
  • Infrastructure spending
  • Investment incentives
  • Job creation incentives

“The Premier needs to show he’s got what it takes to lead the State out of this unprecedented crisis.  ‘Business as usual’ won’t cut it in the midst of a once-in-a-century pandemic, nor will assuming that the State Government stimulus measures announced earlier in the year are near enough to be good enough to help the business community survive.

“There are economic green shoots starting to appear, such as encouraging jobs growth figures.  But that alone is not enough to see Tasmania’s business community not just survive but thrive.

“The Federal Government has given their Tasmanian counterparts a blueprint for economic recovery, it’s up to the Tasmanian Government to take it.”
