TCCI Welcomes Government Taswater stake

Release Date: 1/05/2018
The TCCI today welcomed the announcement the State Government will take a partial stake in TasWater.

TCCI CEO Michael Bailey said this arrangement will provide solutions to many of the issues business was worried about.

“This will also bring certainty around price for business, industry and Tasmanian consumers,’ Mr Bailey said.

“We will now work direct with the State Government to discuss the additional issues that we raised at our session with the Legislative Council.

“This decision makes sense for everyone … but most importantly, Tasmanian consumers and Tasmanian businesses.

“Together, TasWater and the State Government will be able to undertake the massive infrastructure spend of three quarters of a billion dollars in the coming decades.”

Mr Bailey said the Government will contribute $20 million a year to TasWater in exchange for a commitment from the authority for lower prices and faster infrastructure improvements.

“We also welcome the Government making a 50% contribution to the corporate plan and board selection.

“All of this will lead to better outcomes for Tasmania, Statewide.

“For example, TasWater and Government will now work together to relocate the sewerage treatment plant at Macquarie Point … this will be a great result for developing this key parcel of land in the State capital.”
