Prison reset welcome

Release Date: 18/06/2020
The TCCI says the Government’s Westbury prison reset is welcome following months of debate in the local community.

TCCI CEO Michael Bailey said today’s announcement showed the Government was listening to the concerns of the community.

“A good government is one that puts a plan forward for feedback and then takes that feedback on board,” Mr Bailey said.

“A northern prison is well and truly due.  Risdon is crowded and prisoners from the north and north-west should be accommodated closer to home to help with their rehabilitation.

“A northern prison will also be a massive shot in the arm for the region’s economy, right at the time it is most needed.  A construction project this big will support hundreds of jobs and benefit local businesses.  When the prison is operational local businesses will continue to benefit.

“What’s most important now is that the Government delivers this project quickly and gets shovels in the ground as soon as possible.”
