TCCI concerned by increase in unemployment rate

Release Date: 16/10/2020
TCCI CEO Michael Bailey has expressed concern at the significant increase in the unemployment rate revealed in today’s ABS figures.
“The figures released today should be setting off alarm bells in the Premier’s office,” Mr Bailey said.
“The Tasmanian Government needs to follow the Federal Government’s lead and pull out all the stops when it comes to supporting business when it hands down its budget in a few weeks.
“This is exactly why the TCCI has been calling for more support for the business sector, such as payroll tax relief and for the Tasmanian Government to bring forward infrastructure projects.
“This spike in unemployment was before the reduction in JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments, which may compound the problem.
“Business as usual won’t cut it anymore.  The time for talk is over.  The Tasmanian Government needs to make job creation its number one priority and act quickly.”
