Strategy re-think needed in light of border announcement

Release Date: 10/07/2020
TCCI CEO, Michael Bailey, is calling the Government to re-think its strategy in light of today’s border announcement.
“It’s quite clear that even a limited re-opening of borders is now likely to be months away,” Mr Bailey said.
“While we understand the reasons for the decision, this will result in more job losses and more business closures especially with tourism, hospitality and retail exposed businesses.
“Given this and given the fact Tasmania has been COVID-free for many weeks, I think it’s time the Government re-evaluated its strategy for restrictions within Tasmania.
“If we want to give Tasmanian businesses even a fighting chance of being able to survive COVID-19, we need to look at lifting the remaining restrictions that apply locally.
“Importantly, with the school holidays ending, the Government needs to inject an immediate cash stimulus into the Tasmanian economy, to encourage Tasmanians households to spend and support local businesses.”
