Business must be consulted before any decision made on Victorian terminal for Spirits of Tasmania
The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI) has called on the Gutwein Government to consult with Tasmanian business before making any decisions regarding the location of the Victorian terminal for the Spirits of Tasmania.
The TCCI CEO, Michael Bailey, said that it was vital the business community had input into any decision that affected the Spirits of Tasmania.
“The Spirits of Tasmania are vital infrastructure for Tasmanian businesses.  Those vessels are arguably our most important link to the mainland and when docked at Station Pier they are effectively massive floating billboards for our State in the heart of Melbourne, which is probably Tasmania’s most important market in terms of exports and visitors,” Mr Bailey said.
“If the Government is considering changing this arrangement and birthing the vessels in Geelong instead, then businesses that rely on the Spirits must have their voices heard. 
“In recent years, Tasmanian exporters have invested significantly to develop ‘just-in-time’ supply lines to Melbourne, especially for premium fresh produce.  Under the current arrangements, producers know that they can pack their produce in the morning, drop it off in Devonport in the afternoon and it will be delivered to customers first thing the next day.  Tasmanian product can go from a paddock in Smithton to plate in a Smith Street restaurant in less than a day in a cost-effective way that ensures optimal freshness and quality. 
“Moving the Spirit of Tasmania birth to Geelong could potentially affect those vital supply arrangements with Victorian and mainland customers and that is a significant concern to the business community.
“It is up to the Government to ensure that any decision is in the best interests of everyone who uses the Spirits of Tasmania, not just TT Line’s bottom line.  It’s also vital that Tasmanian businesses are included in the decision-making process.”
