Border breakthrough welcome, but no silver bullet for shattered economic sectors

Release Date: 2/10/2020
The TCCI has welcomed the Premier’s announcement that border restrictions will ease later this month.
“This is the good news we have all been waiting for, but it’s not a silver bullet,” TCCI CEO Michael Bailey said.
“Open borders will help a range of Tasmanian businesses, as well as the tourism and hospitality sector.  It’s a massive boost to business confidence, but we can’t lose sight of the fact that many businesses are still doing it tough.
“It will take years for our economy to recover.  With borders reopening, the Government needs to double-down on its support for business.  Payroll tax relief would be a good start, but we also need to bring forward as much infrastructure spending as possible to ensure that our skilled workforce stays right here in Tasmania to rebuild.”
