Nothing fishy about salmon industry

Release Date: 22/11/2016
The TCCI reconfirmed its support for the Tasmanian salmon industry after receiving independent scientific advice at their recent board meeting.

During the comprehensive briefing, it was made clear that the industry has a long and exciting future in Tasmania.

“As with many the TCCI was concerned with the recent negativity around the salmon industry and sought out independent advice,” said TCCI CEO Michael Bailey.

The comprehensive briefing detailed the scientific perspective of several issues raised about the industry.

Key outtakes from the comprehensive briefing include:
  • Tasmania has some of the world’s best researchers specialising in wild salmon farming at the CSIRO, IMAS and within the industry itself. Understanding of the impact of aquaculture on the environment, and the ability to minimise this impact, has evolved dramatically over the last ten years and is among the world’s best practice.
  • Support for the move of the regulator function to Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment. This is a better governance model.
  • The industry is focussed on sustainable growth and best practice animal management.
  • The industry down-streams everything. All of the value of this product is held in Tasmania and shared amongst a variety of businesses, functions and communities. This is exactly the sort of industry that Tasmania needs.
  • The need for a public zoning process to map where the industry should expand in the future.
  • The science shows that the industry is sustainable.

“This is an industry that is managed well, has evolved, is innovating and is growing economically for the State,” said TCCI CEO Michael Bailey.

“It has had a significant impact on regional employment and produces food that the nation and the world needs,” added Mr Bailey.

“Hopefully this industry will be judged through scientific evidence rather than being used as a headline grabber,” concluded Mr Bailey.
