Tasmanian Survey of Business Expectations

Release Date: 2/07/2015
The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s quarterly Tasmanian Survey of Business Expectations highlights the two-speed State economy with overwhelming expectations in the South for business growth compared to North and North West respondents.
The figures are consistent with what industry has been saying for some time, TCCI CEO Michael Bailey said today.
“The survey reflects what we have been hearing from the members around the state and was recognised in the recent State budget which included business packages for the North and North West.
“With the significant infrastructure spending and long term strategies such as the potential move and significant student growth at the Newham University of Tasmania campus to Inveresk, a stone’s throw from the Launceston CBD, you would expect to see a change of confidence in the North and North West.
“The feeling of members is also consistent with recent unemployment, employment participation and population growth in the state. Population growth last month more than doubled in the South compared to a combined North-NW growth.
“We support the infrastructure announcements and there is a clear need to get these moving quickly,” Mr Bailey said.
