The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomes the uptake by another group of high schools to extend classes to years 11 and 12.
TCCI CEO Michael Bailey said the government’s strategy introduced this year was the circuit breaker to improve Tasmania’s retention rate, currently the lowest in the nation.
“Allowing students to remain at their regional high school is the catalyst to encourage more young Tasmanians to complete Year 12, and then maybe also consider a university or tertiary course,” Mr Bailey said.
“I’m sure many parents would prefer to have their children continuing their education to Year 12 but often they are discouraged by the necessity of their children having to leave home and seek accommodation, or face an unacceptable daily travel routine which saps energy and enthusiasm.
“The latest round of extensions for next year will now provide the opportunity for students in areas most needed including the West Coast, the Huon district and Northern regions such as Campbell Town and Cressy, to stay on for years 11 and 12.
“This is the right approach to improve the state’s retention rate and increase the education base of Tasmania’s new workforce.”
