TCCI Supports Tasmanian Petrol Price Probe

Release Date: 8/05/2015
Today’s announcement of the ACCC probe into petrol prices in Launceston was perfect timing considering a 6c per litre increase by some major service stations this week, according to peak industry body, the TCCI.

Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO Michael Bailey welcomed the announcement that Launceston will be the second regional location to be investigated as part of the Federal Government’s petrol monitoring arrangement.

“Today’s price increases are just another example of years of nationally unexplained high prices in the region.  Data shows that last year’s annual petrol price in Launceston was 162.6c per litre, which is about 12c higher than the five major cities and among the highest in Australia.

“In January this year, the difference was a whopping 21.7c per litre more compared to the same interstate cities. There is no logical argument to explain such idiosyncratic movement in price.

“Many inquiries around the nation have failed in the past. I hope the ACCC quickly finds a solution and brings to an end an expensive and frustrating attack on the pockets of the Tasmanian community,” Mr Bailey said.

“Local Federal members have worked hard to have Tasmania included into the ACCC’s investigation and the TCCI will be communicating with Bass Member, Andrew Nikolic, to ensure no stone is left unturned to unearth the facts,” Mr Bailey said.
