Tasmania’s peak business body, the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, congratulated the State Government with the announcement today of a $52 million modernisation plan for the Hobart based smelter.
“This investment, supported by a $29 million grant from the Federal Government, and guaranteed by the State Government, not only secures this vital economic driver but also brings the plant into the modern age,” said TCCI CEO Michael Bailey.
The upgrade is reported to significantly increase the plant’s capacity to treat more complex concentrates.
The funding model is based on the successful partnership brokered in South Australia between Nyrstar and the South Australian State Government for the transformation of the Port Pirie smelter.
“This deal reflects the significant impact that this business has on the Tasmanian economy,” said Mr Bailey.
