TCCI welcome procurement measures

Release Date: 24/01/2014
PEAK business body, the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI) has welcomed new State Government procurement measures that come into effect from tomorrow.

TCCI Chief Executive Michael Bailey said the initiative was a key recommendation flowing from the TCCI facilitated Jobs’ Forum held in August last year.

Mr Bailey said the new measures announced by Premier Lara Giddings increased the threshold for seeking a minimum of three tenders for building and construction work from $10,000 to $50,000 and lifted the threshold for open tender processes for building works from $100,000 to $250,000.

Mr Bailey said business and particularly those in the building and construction sector would be encouraged by the move.

“It does represent a real step forward and we continue to look forward to the implementation of further recommendations from the Jobs’ Forum,” he said.

“It will make it easier for Tasmanian firms to tender for government work and that should help our businesses, employment and the economy.

“The TCCI will continue to push for the removal of red and green tape and for government to make it easier to do business in Tasmania.”

Mr Bailey said the procurement reforms and other initiatives already implemented demonstrated the value of the Jobs’ Forum where the business community was able to present its concerns and outline actions needed to boost the Tasmanian economy, directly to the Premier.

“The Premier is honouring her commitment to act on the Forum recommendations and that is to be welcomed,” he said.
