Business has welcomed the proposed new workplace protest legislation which provides protection for hard working Tasmanians.
Activists have been warned that stopping Tasmanian workers from earning a living is unacceptable, according to the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO Michael Bailey.
While the Bill has yet to receive final approval, Mr Bailey said the message is clear, that if you break the law you will suffer the consequences.
“The legislation does not prevent legitimate protests, nor does it change the right of free speech.
“However, it does provide protection for Tasmanian workers against illegal protests by activists, who have no regard for the rights of workers. Their well planned, illegal tactics result in workers suffering financially and psychologically, as a result of these illegal protests.
“Business hopes that the argument by activists that the end justifies the means should now be scrapped and allow legitimate business to continue without the bully attacks of yesterday.”
Mr Bailey said there was some disappointment with the softening of penalties, however the maximum penalty for repeat offenders had doubled which was a strong message to would be offenders.
