TCCI supports majority government

Release Date: 11/03/2014
Tasmania needs majority government to stimulate jobs and investment in Tasmania, according to the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
TCCI deputy chair, Susan Parr, said it was encouraging to see the strong support - 63 per cent for and 17.9 per cent opposing - for majority government highlighted in the ReachTEL survey in The Examiner on Saturday.
The TCCI has been driving the majority government campaign and has the support of both major parties and the party leaders, Premier Lara Giddings and Opposition Leader, Will Hodgman.
“Tasmania has struggled over the past four years and investment and growth remain sluggish, at best with highest unemployment rate and slowest economic growth in the nation.
“It’s also becoming at both the State and Federal arena that the minority partner, or the cross bench balance of power members, call the tune and we have compromised decisions, or policy which waters down the impact of the decision,” Ms Parr said.
Ms Parr reiterated that TCCI policy was overwhelmingly supported by members and Tasmanian business.
“We must have majority government if we are to stimulate jobs and investment in the state and we must have an administration able to make sound decisions without pandering to minority interests.
A TCCI survey of members and the business community last year revealed 92 per cent of respondents believed majority government would enhance the prospects of their business. The survey results precipitated the TCCI’s campaign for majority government.
