TCCI welcomes Government commitment

Release Date: 8/08/2013
PEAK business organisation, the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(TCCI) has welcomed Premier Lara Giddings’ commitment to take urgent action on
a range of measure flowing from this week’s jobs forum in Launceston.
The forum, involving key business, union and community organisations was
convened by the TCCI at the request of the Premier following the release of jobless
figures which showed Tasmania trailing the nation in unemployment.
TCCI Chief Executive Michael Bailey said the forum was highly productive, but its
value would only be realised if actions matched the commitments given to
participants.
“We welcome the State Government’s promise to reduce regulation and business
will now come up with specific examples for review,” Mr Bailey said.
“Similarly, we welcome the moves regarding procurement and any measures in
this regard that can support Tasmanian business and jobs.
“The introduction of online planning applications and the promised review of
planning costs and a review of review charges will assist development and this
must be actioned as a matter of urgency.
“Local Government’s request for the Economic Regulator to review water and
sewerage head works charges is timely and the Premier’s commitment to take
similar action before the Australian Energy Regulator regarding electricity head
works is a positive addition.”
Mr Bailey said these were all short-term measures that would assist the economy
and employment if they were actioned immediately.
“But Tasmania’s challenges will not be overcome overnight and we require longterm
strategies that will make it easier to do business in this State and ensure that
we are productive, have the necessary skilled employees and are able to produce,
transport and sell our goods and services competitively on local, national and
international markets.
“That is why the establishment of a high level Business Advisory Group as
suggested by the forum is so important and the Government’s adoption of this is a
clear step in the right direction.
“This will enable business to have input to the highest levels of government on the
issues that are concerning it and the opportunities that business is in the best
place to identify.
“The Group will progress the TCCI’s top 10 recommendations from the jobs forum
and can look at vital issues such as the impact of penalty rates, particularly in
small business, ongoing red tape concerns and transportation links and costs,” Mr
Bailey said.
